About the Speaker:
Sayjel is Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Digital Blue Foam — a software startup creating ML-powered tools for the sustainable urban design and real-estate development, and a founding Assistant Professor of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation. Previously, he was a researcher with the SUTD Digital Manufacturing and Design (DManD) Center, where he developed “Voxel Harvest'' an award-winning 3D printing design software, and the MIT Digital Structures Research Group, where he developed new computation methods for generating performative of textures and microstructures using 3D scan data. Sayjel holds a Master of Architecture from MIT (M.Arch ‘15) and an Honours Bachelor of Architectural Studies (HBAS ‘11) from the University of Waterloo.
The building construction industry faces an existential crisis. It is one of the least digitized industries and the world’s leading producer of C02 emissions. With rising temperatures around the globe and mass migration to urban centers, there is a dire need for a digital disruption that will enable more sustainable ways of working. How can we accelerate the building industry's transition to carbon zero to meet strict and urgent climate targets? In this talk, Sayjel will present his entrepreneurship journey as a co-founder of Digital Blue Foam; a Singapore-based software company pioneering a variety of ML-powered tools for sustainable building design. He will share a variety of recent projects, experiments, mis-fires and inspirations, as well as the story of his transition from academia to the start-up world.
